International Sign Typefaces

A variety of typefaces are used by transport authorities across the globe, many of which are specially designed for the purpose.

A selection of these typefaces are available to download free of charge.

All typefaces come in a True Type format, so should will work on both Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

FHWA

This is the original series of typeface used on signs in the United States, but also used in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Spain, Turkey and the Netherlands.

Clearview

Clearview is the new set of typefaces for use on signs in the United States. The "B" set is used with dark text on a light background, whilst the "W" set is used for light on dark.

Parks

A family of two typefaces used on US National Parks Service signage:
  - Old Parks (Clarendon), the traditional typeface now being phased out
  - New Parks (Rawlinson Roadway), the new typeface being used on replacement signage

France

A family of three typefaces:
  - Caracteres L1, for dark text on a light background to sign local destinations (usually black-on-white)
  - Caracteres L2, for light text on a dark backing, used to sign distant locations (white-on-blue or green)
  - Caracteres L4, an italic text used to signpost local amenities (usually black-on-white)

Germany

A family of four typefaces:
  - Mittelschrift, for dark text on a light background
  - Engschrift, for light text on a dark background
  - Autobahnen, a special typeface used to display Autobahn numbers on signs
  - Autobahnen Invers, the light background version of Autobahnen

Greece

A specially extended version of the Transport Medium typeface for use on Greek signage.

Sweden

A family of four typefaces, collectively called Tratex:
  - Negversal, the standard text used on Swedish signs
  - Posversal, similar to Negversal but tends to be used on dark-on-light signs
  - Svart, for dark text on a light background to signing local destinations
  - Vit, similar to Svart but used for light text on a dark background
